Lega Navale Italiana, the Italian Naval League, operates under the supervision of the ministries of Defence, Transportation and Navigation and with the patronage of the President of the Republic, and is concerned with promotion of love of the sea, the seafaring spirit and awareness of maritime issues, particularly among the young. It specifically promotes citizens' participation in the development and progress of all forms of activities related to the sea on a national scale: protection of the marine environment and inland waters and development of promotional, cultural, naturalistic, athletic and educational initiatives pursuing the association's goals. It promotes and supports the practice of yachting and boating activities. The Santa Margherita Ligure Division is an affiliate of Federazione Italiana Vela, the Italian Sailing Federation.
